Nanny State

It is the parents’ responsibility to feed, nurture, and train up children. It used to be clear that raising children was the parents’ responsibility.

In these modern times, a look at recent school policies and court cases reveals that the government thinks children belong to the state. There are examples of the encroachment upon parents’ rights from all parts of the country. Here are just a few examples.

Washington’s Comprehensive Sexual Health Education Law Is Not Healthy and Is Bad Law

Parents are concerned about the new Comprehensive Sexual Health Education law passed in Olympia this March, and they should be.  The standards are heavily influenced by SIECUS (Sexuality Information and Education Council of the US) which was founded in 1964 by Dr. Mary Calderone, the Medical Director for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Government Nannies at Your Door

“We’re from the Government and we’re here to help you.”

Do those words give you a warm, fuzzy feeling? The sponsors of the “Welcome to Washington Baby Act” think so. “A welcome hug from the State of Washington,” is how one Legislative Aide described the bill. The bill in the House of Representatives is HB 1771 and the companion bill in the Senate is SB 5683. It would establish a universal home visiting program for families of newborns. It is becoming the prevailing thought among educators that children belong to the collective. Here is is what MSNBC host and Tulane professor Melissa Harris-Perry said:

“We have never invested as much in public education as we should have, because we’ve always kind of had a private notion of children. Your kid is yours and totally your responsibility. We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children. So part of it is we have to break through our private idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to whole communities. Once it’s everybody’s responsibility and not just the households, then we start making better investments.”

Ms. Harris-Perry defended her statements on her weekend show describing her remarks as “relatively benign.” See her further comments. Sadly, education institutions and social service organizations are increasingly taking a collectivist view and feel they own our children.

How far will government schools go in collecting data on our students? In this case, St. Louis County parents were able to have this activity-monitoring project to shelved.

The student was pressured into eating cafeteria “nuggets” instead. After this incident was reported, the Carolina Journal states that other parents came forward with stories of their experiences. Read the original article, and the follow-up articles.
