Officials re-think their 24/7 activity-monitoring bracelet plan in Missouri

July 7, 2012

The Plan

The Parkway School District in St. Louis County, Missouri  planned to monitor students’ physical activity  using activity-monitoring bracelets, to be worn at school, outside of school, in bed…….24-hours a day. .  Read about this plan on the Missouri Education Watchdog blog. Parents and citizens became concerned that permission was not requested, and they worried about how this data would be used and archived.  Was this monitoring necessary?

The Retraction

After much uproar, even from international sources, the school district decided to shelve their data collection plan, at least for now, “until Parkway [School District] can better educate parents about the devices and get signed permission slips..” Read more about the cancellation of the plan.
