North Carolina Preschooler’s homemade lunch deemed unacceptable by lunch inspector

February 22, 2012

It once would have been unthinkable that a lunch agent would police children’s homemade lunches and approve or reject them, but it happened in North Carolina, under the regulations of their Division of Child Development and Early Education.  Read the original article from the Carolina Journal.

The story,  cited on talk shows and TV shows,  went viral on the internet and crashed the Carolina Journal‘s server.  The Journal then issued an update with corrections.

It appears now that no one will admit to being the agent who inspected and rejected the child’s lunch, and no agency will take responsibility for this action. Read  Who is the mystery food monitor?

The careful attention to lunches was a result of the North Caroline program called More at Four” aimed at at-risk youngsters. We in Washington State have a new Department of Early Learning, and a program called “Thrive by Five,” aimed at all preschoolers. We hope our agency isn’t as extreme as North Carolina’s.

We need to remain diligent to make sure that those organizations do not overstep their bounds and encroach upon parents rights in this state.
