A good idea: Freedom of Conscience in Education
April 18, 2010
Freedom of Conscience in Education (1999-2000:SB5774/HB2030)
Educational Tax Credits
According to our State Constitution, “Absolute freedom of conscience in all matters of religious sentiment, belief and worship shall be guaranteed to every individual, and no one shall be molested in person or property on account of religion.”
- Freedom of Conscience will give true choice in education for those who object to their property tax dollars being used to push a worldview contrary to their own. Currently, parents of home and privately schooled children pay twice to educate their children according to their own beliefs.
- Freedom of Conscience allows any property owner to fulfill his property tax obligation for that portion designated for K12 public education by redirecting it to the private school of his choice or spending it to homeschool his own children.
- Since Freedom of Conscience dollars are never submitted to any government body, only proof of expenditure, there can be NO government strings.
- Any property owner not just parents can take advantage of Freedom of Conscience.
- Freedom of Conscience helps low income children by allowing scholarships for private schools.
