Attorney General Merrick Garland, Department of Justice, and Homeland Security vs Parents
The COVID19 virus has brought us unexpected blessings with respect to education. With lessons being given to students “remotely” at home, parents have been able to find out what is actually being taught, and many are not pleased. Some parents have become involved and have shown up at school board meetings to complain about what they have been seeing – racist attitudes taught under the guise of “equity, diversity, and inclusion”, gender confusing messages embedded in lessons, and concepts which go against traditional American beliefs. Parents have even seen strange things subjects such as math and the required readings that contain anti-family, anti-faith messages. So, “Just what ARE the blessings?” you may ask.
- Parents are finding out what the schools are teaching.
- Parents are becoming involved and attending school board meetings.
- Parents are realizing that THEY are in charge of their children’s education not the government and are reclaiming their children.
- Parents are transferring their children from the government schools to private schools or are embarking on homeschooling.
Of course, people in the education establishment are reacting negatively. Even though teachers and administrators have been saying for years that parents should become more involved with their children’s education and should attend school board meetings, they didn’t really mean it. They were happy when they were given free rein to push their own political and social agenda.
In May, 2021, in a high school in Louden County, Virginia, a boy wearing a skirt raped a female schoolmate in a girls’ bathroom. The father of the victim complained to the principal then, and later at a school board meeting in June, and became upset when the Superintendent lied and denied that the incident happened. There was a commotion, and security staff removed the father who was arrested. See Article. This was one of the incidents which caused the education establishment to ask the federal government to get involved.
On Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021, the National School Board Association (NSBA) submitted a letter to President Biden asking for federal action to protect them from hostile parents—not just for incidents like the one in Louden County, but also because of many parent complaints about masks and other COVID19 policies. There were also complaints about Comprehensive Sex Education, and “Critical Race Theory” – known to educators as “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” or “Culturally Responsive Teaching”. The letter requested FBI and Homeland Security protection and compared parents to domestic terrorists. On Monday, October 4, just three business days later, US Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a letter condemning parents who “threatened” school officials. He also had the US Department of Justice issue a corresponding memo against harassment of school officials and included a hotline phone number in case a situation needed to be reported, anonymous accusations accepted. (Since when does the government respond that fast?) Legally and constitutionally, any disturbances that may occur are a local policing matter and not a federal issue.
Later, the non-profit parents’ organization Parents Defending Education obtained e-mails showing that the NSBA collaborated with the White House on how to craft the letter before they sent it to the White House. The White House then used the letter as a pretext for Federal Homeland Security action. See article. The NSBA letter was written by the organization’s president, Viola Garcia, and the executive director, Chip Slaven, without consulting their board or other state school boards. Therefore, the NSBA later retracted the letter which is no longer on their website, and they wrote a letter of apology. Since there is no longer a documented basis for AG Garland to “sic” Homeland Security on parents, Republican members of the House Justice Committee have written a letter asking him to rescind his order, but he has not yet done so.
Another interesting note is that the White House rewarded NSBA president, Viola Garcia a few weeks later by asking her to join the Federal Department of Education‘s National Assessment Governing Board. See NY Post article.
And the interesting notes keep coming…
Many of the parents’ concerns are about the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT), known to educators as “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).” Attorney General Merrick Garland’s son-in-law heads a company called Panorama which develops and sells a CRT/DEI curriculum to school districts nationwide. It is a trendy and lucrative curriculum widely used in Washington state as well as in many others. This presents a serious conflict of interest. AG Garland wants to criminalize parents who object to CRT curricula while his son-in-law profits handsomely from similar if not that exact curriculum.
It’s hard to predict what will happen next. For now, we parents are being targeted by the FBI and Homeland Security. Remember, you know you’re over the target if you’re taking more flak.
