More madness: shooter-drills in the public school — what happened to academics?
March 9, 2014
In the “good old days” we occasionally had fire drills. In some states there were earthquake drills.
In the wake of the Sandy Hook and other shootings, a Missouri law now mandates simulated shooter drills for the schools!
Some students volunteer to be victims and to be covered with fake blood and bullet holes. Adult drill coaches don masks and act as shooters. Students, many from the drama class, volunteer to be “shot.” Read more.
Are active shooter drills a completely insane idea?– Perhaps it is not if one wants to instill a feeling of insecurity in students to steer students to accept whatever psycho-social-political explanations and solutions the school presents. Perhaps it is not if one wants to create a climate for confiscation of firearms. Sadly, with today’s change of emphasis away from academics and toward behavioral and attitudinal change, these shooter drills fit the public school agenda more closely than multiplication or spelling drills.
