Bah! Humbug! No more Dickens with Common Core

December 29, 2013

Bah! Humbug! Those of us educated before the Common Core will know what literary work is referenced by that exclamation. Okay, so those who watch movies may also know…but they will understand that the movie was made from the book.

All that is changing. The Common Core English Language Arts standards will require 50% of the works students read to be informational texts, not literature, because, they say, workers will be reading informational texts when are on the job. By the end of high schools, 70% of the students’ readings will be informational texts, under the Common Core English Language Arts Standards.

Mind you, of the 30% of readings which are works of literature, many of them will be carefully chosen excerpts, not complete works.

What better way to make sure students never learn the culture, philosophy, beliefs, and lifestyles of the generations that preceded them. What better way to silence the great voices of past writers.
