FERPA changes loosen students’ and parents’ privacy rights
December 29, 2013
FERPA is the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. On 12/02/2011, this administration published the final report on the changes it made to the Act.
Educational and governmental agencies may now authorize more people and agencies to handle private student information, and those agencies, in turn, may authorize others to handle the information. The agencies receiving the information can be in another state, and there is no statute saying the receivers of this information must be in this country.
This is all to accommodate the data collection requirements of the Race to the Top program, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the stimulus bill) , and the America COMPETES Act.
Here is the link to the final version.
