Schools overreact to the mention or the imagined image of guns.

We all deplore gun violence and any other type of violence as well, however we feel many school administrators are overreacting to trivial actions by young students.

In Owings, Maryland, an 11-year old boy was suspended for 10 days simply for talking about guns.

The incident happened several months ago, but the father did not make it public until he heard about other incidents of overreaction.

In Pasco,Washington, a six-year old boy was suspended for talking about a new toy Nerf gun. He was reported by a classmate. The suspension was later overturned.

These and other incidents are disturbing in many aspects. Not only did these incidents occur in non-threatening, innocent circumstances, but some of these unnecessary disciplinary actions will be in students’ lifelong record. There is also a growing and disturbing element of “snitching” involved.
