The Role of “Educators” as seen by Thomas Sowell
December 29, 2013
Thomas Sowell, author of Inside American Education, has been following education for decades. He explains that John Dewey re-defined the role of a teacher..
“…not as a transmitter of a society’s culture to the young, but as an agent of change — someone strategically placed, with an opportunity to condition students to want a different kind of society.”
He deplores the “….misuse of schools to undermine one’s own society..”
The Marxist book he mentions, A Peoples’ History of the United States by Howard Zinn, has been in use in many Washington schools such as the Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap School Districts.
The new Common Core State Standards reflect John Dewey’s philosophy. Dr. Sowell does not mention it in this particular article, but with the new teacher evaluation requirements under the Race to the Top program, teachers will be evaluated on how effectively they deliver the material and their careers will depend on how well the children have internalized these concepts.
Read Dr. Sowell’s commentary.
