Comprehensive Sex Education [more…]

April 15, 2010

In 2007, the Legislature passed SB 5297 banning abstinence-only sex education in Washington State public schools. One would not have been able to tell from the bill’s description which called it an bill “regarding providing medically and scientifically accurate sexual health education in schools.”

Only “approved” sex education curricula could be used. The two most widely used curricula which meet the state standards are the FLASH and the KNOW curricula.

The FLASH curriculum may meet the State’s standards for comprehensive sex education, but it is not acceptable for many families.

Don’t take our word for it. Go to the FLASH website and make up your own mind.  Don’t forget to check out the grade 4,5 and 6  “Review and Resources” pages (lesson 19) which activities, such as the BINGO game using sexually explicit terms. Also look at the Grade 11 and 12 Unplanned Pregnancy lesson (lesson 19) which asks students to brainstorm legal and illegal ways to deal with unplanned pregnancies.
