US Attorney General’s Office wants to deport German homeschool family seeking asylum – How this affects US homeschoolers
March 17, 2013
The Romeike family fled from Germany where they were persecuted for homeschooling. However the US under this administration does not wish to grant them asylum. They were homeschooling for religious reasons, and one would think the US would find that a good reason to defend such seekers of asylum.
The case is before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and is called Romeike v Holder (since the case is filed in the name of the US Attorney General even if he is not personally involved.)
According to Michael Farris of the Homeschool Legal Defense Association, the office of the Attorney General is taking the position that there is no fundamental liberty to homeschool. Read his explanation of the case.
This has grave implications for homeschooling families in the United States. How long will it be before homeschoolers here are compelled to enter government schools. Once again the courts under the current administration are not standing up for individual liberty and religious freedom.
Commentator Todd Starnes, in his article, points out that the current administration is “releasing thousands of illegal aliens – yet wants to send a family seeking political asylum back to Germany.”
