“Common Core State Standards Are ‘Pedagogically Useless’ “
March 30, 2011
Lately, the trend in education circles is to use culture-free standards. Perhaps that is so any particular culture will not be placed at a disadvantage. Unfortunately for those educators, we live in a culture –an American culture–whether they recognize it or not. Culture-free standards ends up being content-free.
The Center for School Reform at the Heartland Institute has posted a a memo to the Massachusetts education commissioner from Elementary and Secondary Education board member Sandra Stotsky. She is also a professor of education reform. Read her memo.
Ironically, the fact that the assessments for the common Core State Standards will all be done on computers is an enormous, unacknowledged barrier for groups unsophisticated in the ways of the computer.
