Military Families Lament End of Program – Kitsap Sun Article

“…For the last four years, military spouses could drop their kids at the YMCA’s ChildWatch center while they went to medical appointments, shopped for groceries or simply took a few hours of personal time — all things made more complicated when acting as single parents during deployments.

“…But state regulators recently determined that the YMCA must either comply with licensing requirements for child-care facilities or stop the program.

“After considering its options, the YMCA reluctantly ended the program Aug. 11.”

“…the DEL [Department of Early Learning] has decided the same lights that are fine for the students all day in the classrooms are suddenly inadequate for the very same children after school. And the playground equipment and bathrooms suddenly become substandard when the school day ends. Did some DEL staffer actually think about the effects of those rules?”
